Professor Charkowski is the chair of the Agricultural Biology Department at the College of Agricultural Sciences at CSU. Her research focuses on how pathogens cause disease in potato, with an emphasis on pathogens that affect biosecurity and agricultural trade. She is an American Phytopathological Society Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, and recipient of the Friday Chair for Vegetable Production Research and the American Phytopathological Society Syngenta Award. Prior to joining CSU, she was a professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also studied food safety as a microbiologist for the USDA-Agricultural Research Service. She earned a B.S. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. at Cornell University.
