Dr. Tom "Mach" Schnell is a Professor in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Human Factors/Ergonomics at the University of Iowa. He holds the Captain Jim “Max” Gross Chair in Engineering. He has a secondary appointment in the UIHC Department of Neurology. Mach is the Founder and Director of the Operator Performance Laboratory. OPL conducts flight test research using its fleet of 8 instrumented aircraft. Mach has an undergraduate degree in EE and an MS and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Human Factors. He is a commercial pilot with over 6,800 hours of flight time. He is also an experimental test pilot with over 2,600 hours of PIC flight testing in fixed wing, rotorcraft, and UAS since 2004 and he is a flight instructor with helicopter, jet, and glider ratings. He frequently flies his unlimited aerobatics Yak-55m and occasionally, he also performs at air shows with the Hawkeye Jet demonstration team. To date, he has been the principal investigator on over 400 projects totaling over $29M. He has authored or co-authored over 140 technical papers.
